GTA Online migration can move an eligible profile along a supported route. It cannot send any character to any platform you choose. The main current routes are PS4 or Xbox One to PS5 or Xbox Series X|S, and PC Legacy to PC Enhanced. The account, source version and destination version all matter.
Before you start, be certain about which character you want to keep. Migration screens can include choices that overwrite an existing character slot, and some GTA$ conditions depend on the move. There is no benefit in rushing past the confirmation just because the download took a long time.
The guidance below applies to the existing GTA Online. It does not establish a transfer into GTA VI. If that is your question, use our current GTA Online to GTA VI transfer guide and keep the two games separate.
Which GTA Online transfers are supported?
Rockstar’s character-transfer guidance allows PS4 or Xbox One progress to move to either PS5 or Xbox Series X|S. Its separate PC procedure covers Legacy to Enhanced.
| Source | Destination | What to use |
|---|---|---|
| PS4 | PS5 | Console-generation migration procedure |
| PS4 | Xbox Series X|S | Console-generation procedure, including currency conditions |
| Xbox One | Xbox Series X|S | Console-generation migration procedure |
| Xbox One | PS5 | Console-generation procedure, including currency conditions |
| PC Legacy | PC Enhanced | PC migration procedure |
| PS5 | Xbox Series X|S, or the reverse | Not supported by the documented character-transfer rules |
| PlayStation or Xbox console versions | PC | Not supported |
| PC | PlayStation or Xbox console versions | Not supported by the PC migration procedure |
| Current GTA Online | GTA VI | These migration documents do not establish that transfer |
An Xbox One to PS5 move can therefore be a supported older-to-newer console route. That is different from moving an existing PS5 profile to Xbox Series X|S.
Check the game version, not just the device sitting under the television. Write the source exactly as it appears in your installed game or library. Then write the intended destination. If that pair is not supported, creating links between accounts will not turn it into a supported migration.
Is migration the right move for you?
The first reason to move should be the version you actually intend to play. Think about your computer or console, access to the destination product and the people you want to join.
Migration is a progress move. It is not a promise of crossplay. You can make a supported move and still find that a friend uses a different game version. Compare your planned destination with their version before committing. The GTA Online crossplay guide covers that separate question.
Consider this example: you have an established older-console character, but your usual friend still plays the older version. A new-console version may suit your solo play, while your old version remains relevant to meeting that friend. The sensible decision is to understand both uses before making the new profile your everyday one.
On PC, first check that Enhanced works suitably on your machine. Its system requirements differ from Legacy. A completed migration does not improve hardware or make an incompatible installation usable. Our platform access guide explains the checks to finish before treating migration as your next task.
You do not need to turn this into weeks of preparation. You need a clear destination, a working installation and confidence about the selected profile.
Prepare a small record of the character you expect
Before confirming, make a short private record. Include:
- Source platform and game version.
- The profile or character you intend to move.
- Its approximate rank and the assets you care about.
- Destination platform and version.
- Whether you already have progress or money at the destination.
- Any uncertainty about purchased GTA$ or a previous migration.
Screenshots can help you compare what appears afterwards, especially if you have not used the character for a long time. They are a reference for you and possibly for official support. They are not a backup that lets you restore a server-held profile yourself.
Do not collect passwords in this note. Use the official services to confirm the intended account. On a shared console or computer, check the signed-in account before opening the migration screen. Being familiar with the device does not guarantee that the right account is active.
If you cannot access the account that holds the character, deal with that first. Our account and game setup guide helps separate identity recovery from installing a game. A new account made in a hurry is not a recovery of the original one.
Console migration: where to start and what to read
Rockstar’s console migration procedure offers migration from the landing page or, later, through Pause Menu → Online → Migrate Profile. Sign in on the intended destination and compare the selected source profile with your record before confirming.
The important console consequences are these: the older-generation profile remains, later progress is not synced between generations, some profiles are ineligible, and choosing a new character in the review flow can overwrite the existing character slot. The procedure also ties Criminal Enterprise Starter Pack benefits to a migrated character that had access on the older version.
Give the character-review screen the same attention as the migration confirmation. If your aim is to keep your old character, a new-character option is not simply a harmless welcome screen. Read what the game says the selection will change.
Use this pause before each confirmation:
- Does this show the source profile I intended?
- Am I in the destination version I planned?
- Am I continuing with the character I want, rather than replacing it?
- Have I read any warning about balances or existing progress?
If a row is unclear, leave the decision unconfirmed while you resolve it. Waiting at a choice is cheaper than trying to undo a choice after the service has accepted it.
PC Legacy to Enhanced: a separate procedure
Use Rockstar’s PC Legacy-to-Enhanced instructions. The move starts inside Enhanced, through the landing page or Pause Menu → Online → Migrate Profile. If you have already played Online in Enhanced, use the pause-menu route.
The Legacy profile remains, but later progress in the two versions is separate. Migration may take time, and Online access to both versions is unavailable while it is processing. Follow the displayed instructions about when exiting the migration screen is safe.
The PC character-review flow also warns that choosing a new character overwrites the existing slot. Starter Pack benefits belong to the character that claimed them in Legacy and then migrated. Some profiles are ineligible.
That is the procedure summary. Your practical job is to avoid creating extra uncertainty around it. Do not start a complicated new Enhanced routine simply to test whether you can migrate later. If you already have Enhanced progress, write that down and read the destination-balance rule below before moving anything.
Plan the move when you can give the confirmation your attention and do not urgently need to enter a mission. A process controlled by the service is a poor thing to start five minutes before you promised to join somebody.
What happens to GTA$?
Rockstar’s GTA$ migration conditions distinguish purchased currency from currency earned through play.
Purchased GTA$ transfers between the same console family: PS4 to PS5, or Xbox One to Xbox Series X|S. Earned GTA$ transfers regardless of console family within the supported migration routes.
For PC Legacy to Enhanced, Rockstar states that migration removes any unspent GTA$ already in the Enhanced balance. Do not assume that two existing balances will be added together.
Here are three planning examples, rather than predictions of your account’s exact balance:
| Situation | The point to understand before moving |
|---|---|
| PS4 to PS5 with earned and purchased GTA$ | This is a same-family console move |
| Xbox One to PS5 with earned and purchased GTA$ | The purchased-money condition differs from earned money |
| Legacy to Enhanced after playing Enhanced | Check the removal of existing unspent Enhanced GTA$ |
If you do not know where part of your balance came from, do not invent a precise expected amount. Check the current support conditions, the game warning and any relevant purchase records. Give official support a specific question if the distinction remains unclear.
Avoid making a new currency purchase to “protect” a migration without first understanding what the procedure does. Spending real money does not remove an unsupported-platform restriction or guarantee eligibility.
Why retained profiles do not mean live syncing
A retained source profile is useful, but it creates a common misunderstanding. You may still have access to the old version and assume every new purchase or completed mission will follow your newer character. The documented routes do not provide that ongoing sync.
Think of the migration as a move with a starting point. Afterwards, the old and new versions can develop differently. If you play both, label your notes so you do not attribute a vehicle, payout or completed task to the wrong version.
An example: after moving to a new version, you finish an activity in the old one. That new result is not evidence that the destination should show it. Your diagnosis begins with “which version did I earn this in?” before it becomes “what went missing?”
Choose one version for your main progression plan. If you keep using another for a particular reason, write that reason next to it. This is more practical than maintaining one combined list that no longer matches either character.
Migration is unavailable or fails: what to do next
First distinguish unsupported, ineligible, processing and unexpected result. They describe different problems.
An unsupported route needs a different plan. An eligibility warning needs the exact message and account context. Processing needs the on-screen instructions. An unexpected result after completion needs a comparison with the profile you selected.
Rockstar lists suspensions, bans, illegitimate progress and insufficient progress among possible eligibility issues. The support pages do not give you a universal target such as “play this many hours to qualify.” Do not turn somebody else’s anecdote into a guaranteed repair.
Use these branches:
- The migration option is missing: confirm the destination version and use its official procedure. On PC, note the pause-menu route for players who already entered Enhanced.
- The game says the profile is ineligible: record the full message. Do not delete characters or repeatedly unlink accounts to test guesses.
- The move is processing: follow the current alert. A longer wait is not proof that the move failed.
- The character looks wrong after completion: check the account, selected profile and version first. Preserve screenshots and contact official support if the result remains inconsistent.
If an account is suspended or banned, migration is not an appeal process. Use the ban and suspension guide for that separate issue.
A useful support request states source version, destination version, the point where the process stopped and the exact message. Include evidence through the official support form when requested. Publicly posting account secrets will not make the case easier to solve.
Your first session after migration
Once the game reports completion, spend the first visit checking the character rather than immediately buying or replacing things. Confirm rank, balance and the assets that matter to your next task.
You do not need to inspect every outfit and every vehicle before playing. Start with the few things your current plan depends on. If your next session is meant to use an owned business, confirm that business. If you mainly want to practise driving, confirm the vehicle you intend to use.
Write a simple handover: “Destination version confirmed; expected character present; main property checked; next visit do one familiar activity.” This turns a successful transfer into a usable starting point.
If the character has years of accumulated assets and you cannot remember what each one does, use the returning-player reset guide. The useful reset is in your plan: rediscover what you already own and select a manageable route.
You can now stop thinking about migration and start thinking about play. Keep the source and destination labels in your notes, use the right version for the people you join, and treat any future GTA VI transfer announcement as a new game-specific decision.
