For current GTA Online on a console, owning the game and paying for console multiplayer access are separate requirements. PlayStation’s UK GTA listings say PS Plus is required for online play. On Xbox, you need a plan that includes online console multiplayer. GTA+ is an optional Rockstar membership; it does not replace either of those checks.
Official pages checked on 14 October 2026 list online multiplayer in PS Plus Essential, with the higher PlayStation plans including those core benefits. Xbox’s UK Game Pass page lists online console multiplayer in Essential, Premium and Ultimate. Choose by the benefit you need, rather than assuming every subscription with a gaming name does the same job.
These rules concern current GTA Online. They do not establish future GTA VI online access, prices or membership requirements. The GTA VI online date guide keeps that separate.
The three purchases people often mix together
First comes access to the game: a purchase, a valid disc where supported, or access through a subscription catalogue that currently includes the exact version. This is what lets your account use that product.
Second comes console multiplayer access: PS Plus or a qualifying Xbox plan. This is the platform service needed for paid online console games under the applicable rules. A game purchase does not automatically include it.
Third comes optional game benefits: GTA+ is Rockstar’s membership with benefits for supported current versions. It has its own terms and renewal. Buying it because you see “GTA” in the name will not fix a missing console multiplayer membership.
Imagine buying a ticket to a venue, paying for transport there and choosing an optional package once inside. All three can cost money, but buying the optional package does not replace your ticket or transport. Here, the useful question is which layer is missing, rather than which subscription sounds most complete.
The version and membership table
The table is for installed console play. Cloud streaming is a separate service with its own supported-game and plan conditions, so it should not be used to read around these rows.
| Current game context | Game access you must check | Console multiplayer layer | GTA+ distinction |
|---|---|---|---|
| PS4 version of GTA V / GTA Online | Access to the PS4 game product | PS Plus; Essential includes online multiplayer | PS4 version does not provide GTA+ in-game benefits |
| Native PS5 GTA Online | Access to the PS5 Online product or an applicable GTA V bundle | PS Plus; Essential includes online multiplayer | Optional membership for supported PS5 version |
| Xbox One version of GTA V / GTA Online | Access to the Xbox One product | Xbox plan with online console multiplayer | Xbox One version does not provide GTA+ in-game benefits |
| Native Xbox Series X|S GTA Online | Access to the Series X|S Online product or applicable bundle | Current Game Pass page lists Essential, Premium and Ultimate with online console multiplayer | Optional membership for supported Series version |
| Older console edition running on newer hardware | Access to that older edition | Check the same console multiplayer layer | Newer hardware does not turn the installed older edition into a GTA+ supported edition |
Do not stop at “I have a PS5” or “I have a Series X”. Check what game entry you are launching. A newer device and a newer game edition are not the same thing. This becomes especially important when you are paying for an optional benefit that only works in selected versions.
Choosing PS Plus without paying for the wrong reason
If you already own the game and your only missing requirement is ordinary online multiplayer access, PS Plus Essential includes that benefit. Extra and Premium include more features and access options, but a higher tier is not required merely because GTA Online has a large world or many activities.
There can be a different reason to choose a higher tier: access to a game catalogue you actually want to use. In that case, check whether the exact GTA product is included now for your UK account, and how long your access depends on the subscription and the title remaining available.
Avoid treating a catalogue badge as ownership. You can have the files installed while the permission to use them depends on an active subscription. If the catalogue title leaves or your plan changes, the installed files alone are not a permanent purchase.
For an example player who owns GTA V and only wants a few current Online sessions, the first comparison is the multiplayer benefit and period they need. For another player who wants several catalogue games, the wider tier may offer value. The second person’s reason should not become an automatic instruction for the first.
Choosing Xbox Game Pass: read the multiplayer benefit
The current UK Game Pass comparison lists online console multiplayer under Essential, Premium and Ultimate. PC Game Pass is a separate PC plan; a PC-only label should not be treated as a console multiplayer entitlement.
You may still see older names in game listings or articles. The checked Xbox GTA Online store result uses “Core or Ultimate” wording, while the current plan page lists Essential, Premium and Ultimate. To decide what to buy now, read the live plan benefit and the membership recognised on your console. The important benefit is online console multiplayer, not matching an old label from a search snippet.
If you already own the correct game, a catalogue full of extra games is a separate value choice. If you rely on Game Pass to provide the game itself, you need both the right plan and the exact title’s current availability. A plan having multiplayer access does not mean every paid game is included in its catalogue.
This distinction can explain a confusing situation: you have an active subscription and Online still will not open because access to the game has ended. The multiplayer layer can be valid while the game layer is missing. Check them independently before upgrading a plan or buying another copy.
GTA+ is optional, and version-specific
Rockstar’s membership support page explicitly describes GTA+ as optional. The checked benefits support page says current GTA Online benefits are available for PS5, Xbox Series X|S and PC Enhanced, rather than the PS4, Xbox One or PC Legacy versions.
This means someone running the PS4 version on a PS5 should not assume that owning newer hardware makes their GTA+ benefits appear. The installed edition still matters. The same distinction applies to an Xbox One edition running on Series hardware.
If your goal is to enter Online, start with the game and platform multiplayer requirements. Evaluate GTA+ after that, based on benefits you actually want and can use in a supported version. Its name should not make it the default first purchase.
A Shark Card is different again. It is a currency product, not a console multiplayer pass. Buying GTA$ cannot replace a missing PS Plus or Xbox multiplayer entitlement. If the game is showing a platform membership prompt, adding in-game money addresses the wrong problem.
Playing alone still uses an online service
An invite-only session is a way to control who joins your current GTA Online session. It does not turn GTA Online into GTA V Story Mode or remove the console online-play requirement shown on the product listing.
This is a common surprise. You can want to play without other people and still be using an online game. “Solo” describes how you want to play; “offline” describes whether the game is using the service. Those words are not interchangeable.
If your aim is completely separate single-player story play, check whether your purchased GTA product includes Story Mode. A standalone Online purchase should not be assumed to include every other game mode. Our game and account setup guide helps separate what the product provides from what your account can access.
When you do want current Online with fewer interruptions, the invite-only session guide covers that session choice. Make it after the access checks, so the session plan starts from a game you can open.
A short diagnosis before spending more
1. Read the exact message. A request for PS Plus or console multiplayer access points to a different layer from a request to buy the game. A network connection error is different again. Photograph or note the wording privately so you do not rely on memory when comparing it with support advice.
2. Check the account currently signed in. Review the product and subscriptions recognised for that account. A receipt belonging to another account does not automatically prove that this account has the same access. If you depend on platform sharing features, read the platform’s applicable sharing rules before buying twice.
3. Check the installed game version. Confirm the product name and generation in your library. Do this before reinstalling anything. Removing and downloading a large game again will not purchase a missing entitlement.
4. Check your membership status and benefits. An expired membership and a plan that lacks the required benefit need different fixes. A paid period remaining after renewal was turned off is different from a period that has already ended.
5. Check game access separately. If the game came through a catalogue, confirm that the exact product remains available to your plan and region. If you bought it, check that the store recognises the purchase before choosing another edition.
Once those checks are complete, act on the missing layer. If both ownership and membership are recognised but a service error remains, use the access troubleshooting route and official support. Do not add optional subscriptions as a way of testing a connection problem.
Free-play promotions are temporary exceptions
You may remember entering Online during a period when a platform membership requirement was waived. A genuine temporary promotion can explain that memory. It does not establish permanent free console access.
To use such an offer, check its official dates, region and eligible product. A screenshot from a previous year cannot tell you what is active today. If the standard product page lists a membership requirement and you cannot find a current official exception, plan for the standard requirement.
The same care applies to free trials. A trial’s entry conditions and end date matter, as does any automatic continuation shown before you accept it. Avoid planning recurring play around a short offer without checking what happens when it ends.
Keep the monthly cost easy to understand
Write down the game cost separately from the platform membership and any optional GTA+ cost. Include the period each payment covers. A cheaper monthly-looking figure can involve a longer commitment, while a discounted first period may renew at another price.
This page does not quote a fixed price because your account’s offer, term and live checkout determine the amount. Read the renewal amount and billing date in the store you use. If you are buying for a short return to current Online, compare that use with the paid period rather than choosing the largest bundle automatically.
Review each subscription in the store where it was bought. Turning off one membership does not necessarily turn off another. GTA+ has its own cancellation route, and the platform membership has its own account controls. Rockstar’s cancellation guidance says GTA+ auto-renewal is managed through the store of purchase.
You can now make a precise choice: correct game version first, console multiplayer benefit second, optional benefits third. When a game will not open, find the missing requirement before paying for an extra. That keeps your money attached to the access or enjoyment you actually want.
